<br />
I have a dream web page in mind that I still hope to create when I have a bit more time to learn some JavaScript or html5, but for now, this will do. Feedback is welcome before I make version two.<br />

New (and final) semester starting Monday. Goodbye again and wish me luck for thesis.s.x.chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06172971184059251750noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-146694312877858865.post-81973711668470382152012-06-28T16:17:00.002-07:002012-06-28T16:19:15.393-07:00Not Quite the EndI was talking with one of the other interns the other day, talking about how things feel like they are winding down here and it's already the time where we're starting to think about leaving. I'm not looking forward to it, but there are a few things that will definitely make me very happy when I get back.<br />
<br />
<br />
Space<br />
<i>Yes, it's nice to not be economical sometimes.</i><br />
<br />
My piano and guitar.<br />
<i>I had been working on a song before coming here, but I've already lost the inspiration for it.</i><br />
<br />
An actually good burger.<br />
<i>The Jose burger at Marronniers is really not good at all unless you just like toppings.</i><br />
<br />
A Taiwanese stocked supermarket/Russo's<br />
<i>Having trouble reproducing some of my favorite tastes.</i><br />
<br />
Not needing to watch out for crap on the streets.<br />
<i><span style="background-color: white;">Not needing to smell the </span><span style="background-color: white;">aforementioned</span><span style="background-color: white;">.</span></i><br />
<br />
My usual breakfast.<br />
<i>Over easy egg with sweet chili, tots, toast, and homemade jam.</i><br />
<br />
All the people I left in February.<br />
<i>Although there will be many to miss after going back too.</i><br />
<br />
Less creepy men.<br />
<i>At least harassment will be illegal.</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
I would also love me some fresh made passion fruit juice right now, but i will not be getting that in Boston either.<br />
Sigh. Goodnight world.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-146694312877858865.post-12743915329508456912012-05-20T07:22:00.002-07:002012-05-20T07:50:54.501-07:00Vitra/Basel<i>(Last post before being updated with all the photos on my computer. I may take a pause on blogging in favor of having more time for other things)</i><br />
<br />
Vitra got started as a furniture manufacturer by gaining the rights to produce furniture which they fell in love with on a tour of the shopfronts in the US. Now they hold the rights to most of the best known designer furniture brands and also produce pieces of their own. The campus is a little bit of an architecture zoo, which began after the campus burnt down and needed to be rebuilt. Gehry suggested having a campus as diverse and well-designed as the furniture produced. Since then, the number of buildings designed by Pritzker Prize architects on the grounds has increased to six.<br />
<br />
I'm not sure if this is always true, but many of the buildings felt underused, like sculptures in an exhibition rather than a holder of a manufacturing facility.<br />

The story of the fire station is interesting, as originally the campus was too far away from the city to have proper fire protection, after the big fire, a set of employees became trained as firemen specifically for the campus. Zaha was directly comissioned for the project as a young architect who had won many competitions but never had a client willing to build her unconventional designs. This was her first project. I admire that she stuck to her ideas of movement and energy in architecture even when those ideas were new and unaccepted by construction and clientele, and am glad Vitra allowed those ambitions to come into being.<br />

Ando's story is also notable, as he came from a poor background, but very interested in architecture and being able to travel to see architectural works. In order to have the money to make this wish come true, he went into boxing and was successful enough to have the money both to travel and to open his own practice upon returning to Japan.</div>

After a lot of potatoes, chocolate, and spending the night at the classiest hostel ever (similar in quality to some of the nicer hotels I've been to), we toured around Basel, looking at older Herzog and de Meuron buildings around town.<br />
<br />
Below is the Railway Signal Box by Herzog and de Meuron. It was one of the projects noted by the Pritzer Prize jury when HdM received that prize. It is simple, industrial, and sculptural. The strips of copper are twisted to allow daylight into spaces inside.<br />

The city of Versailles was like a quieter, smaller version of Paris. We met up with one of my coworkers who lives in Versailles for some cake and tea before heading home.

This is the last of my Corbusier pilgrimage, at least for now. It's the first house by Corbusier that I've been to. There are many Corb houses in Paris, but all of those seem difficult to visit, requiring reservation or only open on weekdays. We made the trip out to Poissy on the Friday of my Birthday</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This house is a perfect example of Corbusier's 5 principles of modern architecture. It is also a good example of the house as a 'machine for living'. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was natural light which filtered through all the spaces of the house, aided by the overlapping of spaces and levels, characteristic of Corbusier. Talking about the manipulation of light sometimes seems cliche and overused, but the experience of it when well done is always still powerful.

<br />
It's also impressive to think about these sort of places being designed mainly in plan, section, and elevation. The ability to think about complex 3d space through 2D drawing is somewhat lost today; it is instead being replaced by ever more complex 3D thinking in 3D.<br />

We got off at a train station that consisted of a small shelter that looked like it could have been for just a bus and a stairway to cross the tracks. Upon looking for lunch, we realized that all the restaurants are closed for lunch in Ronchamp (1-3p... who would have thought?), so we 'fasted' and made the pilgrimage up to the chapel on empty stomachs. </div>

The chapel did not disappoint. The approach to the building starts at a small stair which gives the 'magazine view'of the building. My first thought that it looked just like the photos, but being at the site helps bring out a lot of the smaller details and how all the parts relate. There is a play between interior and exterior through the thick wall and a lot of texture that is not understood in photos.<br />
<br />
Large mural covered doors pivot on a central pin to open into the building.<br />

A new addition to the mix is the welcome center and monastery by Renzo Piano Building Workshop. While I wasn't too impressed by the approach to this building from the exterior, as Renzo interns we had the privilege of getting a tour by one of the sisters through the monastery, and by the end we were all pleasantly surprised by the addition. As with all of Renzo's work, the craft, material, and detail of the building are superb. </div>

<span style="text-align: left;">The project is buried into the hill facing away from the chapel so that it disappears from view while also giving the monastery amazing views over the countryside. Light-wells for the small offices buried in the hill, provided light and natural ventilation, and actually made for quite cozy rooms. There was not the sense of being underground, and most of us preferred this to the super lit rooms on the exterior face of the building. </span>

We were all amazed by the small prayer room at the end of our visit. After the simple straight forms of the rest of the building, it was the first (only?) curve we saw in the building, reflecting light into the space from a hidden skylight just beyond. The enclosure of the space is made up of a series of broken up walls rather than one closed surface, and the chairs in the room are custom designed by Vitra/Piano just for this project, as the sisters were looking for simple chairs which could be sat in for long periods of time.<br />

In the building overall there was a lot of care put into what one sees as one travels through building. None of the circulation leads to flat blank walls, and the length of the long bar buildings shifts and is broken up by light, as the building follows the curve of the hill. This stair is one example of circulation providing a smooth transition between spaces.<br />

Very importantly, the sisters seem very pleased with their new space and with their experience with Renzo.<br />

There's an international school in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, where Corbusier has two buildings. The campus itself was split into two parts, one park-like area filled with sports fields, courts, and green lawn; and the other filled with buildins of many styles, reflecting the international population of the school. The strangest was a Mediterranean style building with a Chinese tile roof tacked on, as if that's all it takes to make a building Chinese. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Corb's buildings are for the Brazil and Swiss dorms at the Eastern end of the campus. Lucio Costa and Corbusier collaborated on the Maison du Brésil, with Corbusier gradually taking over. I had not done any research beforehand, but the building was immediately recognizable. The composition is playful, with colors highlighting certain openings of the building; there is a skillful use of poured in place concrete with window openings placed in ways which break up the mass and talk about the scale of inhabitation; the form of the building is diverse with details in concrete (tables, ledges, benches) incorporated into the design; and the whole composition sits lightly on the ground. </div>

The ceiling in the lobby slopes down towards the entrance. Not being very tall, this was one of the few spaces I've been in where I've been made conscious of the space above my head. It created a nice feeling of expansion when walking into the building.<br />

Fondation Suisse (below) is more reserved from the exterior, but Corbusier's play with curved walls, massing lifted from the ground, light, and concrete construction are still evident. It's worth going to the building's website to look at the play of colors that become evident at night: <a href="http://www.fondationsuisse.fr/">http://www.fondationsuisse.fr/</a><br />

Hey look, it's the other side of Paris. Since most of Paris has been frozen into a moment of history architecturally, La Defense is where all the new buildings go. What can i say... bigger than I expected, biggest business district in Europe. It is also possibly the most spacious developed urban area I've ever been to. It felt very open, like a city/plaza wrapped into one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most of the people here that I've mentioned La Defense to scoff at it as a boring place not worth visiting. I'd say it's worth visiting, if only just to understand the way Paris has been developing as a whole and not just the quaint romantic side of things. It's also worth checking out the concrete domed shopping center, the largest thin shell concrete structure in the world. (Also makes for the largest shopping center in Europe).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I found out about this church on a visit to a nearby exhibit of some of Renzo Piano Building Workshop's work at the Palais de Justice. When passing by the church, one of my coworkers burst out into praises for the building, saying that we must absolutely all visit it. This endorsement was early on in my time here and was one of my first introductions to the very dramatic way French often express things. Of course, things might be less dramatic in french as heard by french speakers; but in direct translation to english, I've heard and received compliments around the office for simple things being 'perfect' 'magnificent' 'beautiful' 'incredible', words that would be used much more sparingly in the English language. I went with high expectations. </div>

The chapel was impressive. It was quite unlike any of the other European chapels I've visited. The space felt like a being in a jewel filled with light; all of the walls between the structural columns were made up of stained glass windows detailing out all of the stories of the bible from start to end.<br />

These are the two parks of Paris which were introduced to me via architecture school. They are both located in the North Eastern part of Paris. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Buttes Chaumont was created as a garden showcase by Napolean III. It is an artificially formed landscape on the site of an old quarry. Amazingly, many of the large landscape features, including the large cliff and caves are man-made from concrete. The park was originally a very controlled landscape which had political significance by directing the way visitors would look back on the city from the park. It later became overgrown, making it the most natural looking park in Paris despite it's artificial beginnings. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
An alternative description by Temba is that the park is a Parisian couples' perfect spot for a first date. (Meet Temba. He's one of the other interns.)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2_hdL3gtZA1HQvp_4-Z3O6AhH5wb9HxC1_QflgJnT6dOrTLUzCBVobw6xKilAHVN6YRmPprJ2Ja04eU4tmujN-khiFnZqPmhnDv0MZoYmASBA3UHMR4w4nNho6H98zKdyaznerPgq8o8/s1600/DSC_5322e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2_hdL3gtZA1HQvp_4-Z3O6AhH5wb9HxC1_QflgJnT6dOrTLUzCBVobw6xKilAHVN6YRmPprJ2Ja04eU4tmujN-khiFnZqPmhnDv0MZoYmASBA3UHMR4w4nNho6H98zKdyaznerPgq8o8/s320/DSC_5322e.jpg" width="148" /></a></div>
<br />
La Vilette (below) strives not to be the traditional park. Rather than the structured landscape of Buttes Chaumont, it tries to be a stage for human interaction, encouraging play and activity. Included in the park are performance venues, museums, and enormous grass lawns where no activity is defined, except potential interaction with a series of follies. The park is based on the deconstructive principles of Derrida and designed by Tschumi. There are a set of gardens created by different designers. Below are the garden of mirrors and the garden of winds and hills.<br />
<br />
(After these two photos were taken, I was warned by a lady walking her dog to put my camera away, because of there being thieves in the park. While I love the idea of this park, this warning was not encouraging, and neither was watching groups of drunk teenage boys pissing on walls midday.)<br />

La Vilette was one of the most racially diverse places I've seen in Paris, probably due to it's location. Each group seemed to be doing it's own thing. Racially diverse but not racially mixed, unsurprisingly. Overall the whole environment reminded me of high school. Nice things, mean things, low class, high class, good potential for fun, but also potential for things to go wrong. Despite all this, I got the sense that the park would have been different if we had been visiting on a weekend, when more of the working class population of Paris could come out too.<br />

Paulis insisted on needing to do the most stereotypical tourist thing in Paris when he visited. We climbed the Eiffel Tower (just to level two, the elevator line was too long). The view was phenomenal, but what did we expect? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also got unexpected enjoyment from seeing all the structure in the tower... I guess super tourist things can be genuinely cool too.</div>

One of many welcome Parisian surprises. This memorial by French architect Pingusson commemorates 200,000 people who were deported from France to concentration camps during WWII. It's fairly hidden underground, just behind Notre Dame at the tip of the island. A coworker told me about the memorial. I was expecting the usual statue with inscription, distinguished only by being underground. The memorial is a sort of sculpture, but one experienced by being walked through. Quite a powerful space, perfectly located. </div>

One of the privileges included is free access to a lot of museums and other cultural sites. With all the gray days these past weeks, museums have served as good things to do indoors. I even went a little overboard with the museum visiting: Musee Orsay, Orangerie, Louvre, Centre Pompidou, and Palais Tokyo. Most of them do not allow photos, so the photo selection is meager but the collections here are really fantastic.<br />

I went to Orsay (above) and Palais Tokyo (below) both in the same day. Quite different places. Orsay keeps mainly french collections from 1848-1915, while Palais Tokyo displays contemporary art pieces of the sort that I think leaves most people confused. The buildings for both are reused structures which had past lives (Orsay, a train station... the other an international exhibition space which had been partly demolished and abandoned before being repurposed). I found the recreation of both spaces very successful for the types of work they held. Palais Tokyo gets mixed reviews from others (the dark, unfinished basement area feels like the leaky basement of an abandoned parking garage), but not all art belongs or even works in the "neutral" white box gallery environment. </div>

I still get my groceries at Bastille, despite it being crowded and touisty. After last week, I will think about the space of that plaza very differently. We wandered into this crowd without quite knowing what was happening, but we found out real quick. We were just looking to get onto the metro (this was unsuccessful); there were people everywhere cheering and dancing, live music playing, food trucks everywhere, and eventually the new president taking the stage. Hollande (Socialist) had just beat Sarkozy (Conservative) by 52%. Was quite cool to see. </div>

I went to see the Père Lachaise Cemetery one weekend before heading over to the apartment of some of the other interns for some wine, baguette, jambon, and good company. They lived nearby, but I totally underestimated the vastness of the cemetery and ended up arriving almost an hour after I had planned. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because of its scale and also the large house-like tomb structures, the place feels a bit like a little town for the dead. There's also an impressive list of 70 famous that are buried here. A few that I recognized included Balzac, Bellini, Bizet, Bugatti, Chopin, Delacroix, Haussman, La Fontaine, Moliere, Pissaro, Proust, Rossini, Seurat, Gertrude Stein, Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. Associated with some of these are traditions upon visiting the graves. Flowers for Chopin, subway tickets, joints for Morrison... </div>

I've always had a strange love for cemeteries. Love walking through them, reading the epitaphs, looking at the dates. Many of them are also incredibly beautiful sites (like the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston), or just meditative and calm, places for memories. </div>

In contrast to this is the Parisian catacombs. To get there, one walks through a non-descript door off a street in southern Paris, descends down so many stairs I almost began to think the stairwell didn't have an end (19m), and walks through the tunnels of the old limestone quarry. Here the bones of thousands of Parisians are deposited from graveyards around the city that were becoming too crowded and also unsanitary for the city's well water. The bones are actually stacked in quite an aesthetic manner, and the 45 minute walk through tunnels of bones stacked shoulder high on both sides surprisingly negates any feelings of disgust, replacing them with spectacle. (Quite dehumanizing). </div>

<a href="http://www.dreamhub21.com/">http://www.dreamhub21.com/</a>
<br />
<br />
The <i>really </i>tall one. 620 meters tall!<br />
<br />
Except I'm not working on the tower. I'm working on the podium at the base of the tower that you can just barely see as you 360 around the site. The podium is enormous; it encompasses retail, a conference center, a large auditorium, and also a bridge which brings people from the Yongsan train station to the tower within a lifted landscape/roof. For all of that, it's still dwarfed by the massiveness of the tower.<br />
<br />
I can't find any images I really like of the project online, so this will be my first image-less post in a while.<br />
(In case someone from the office stumbles upon this blog while obsessively google-ing the project, hello!)<br />

This is a scene I saw walking back to my apartment returning from my trip to Barcelona.<br />

I haven't had a real break for Easter since high school. My memories of Easter for the past seven(?) years has been stressing out about schoolwork while trying to enjoy some Easter celebration or another. This year I got a real break. Four days with no responsibility other than to be a good architecture explorer. My place of choice was Barcelona. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's really too much to say, so I'm just going to let the pictures speak for themselves, but my general impression of the city was that of warmth, both in terms of temperature and ambiance. Being in Barcelona makes the streets of Paris seem cold, especially since we haven't seen a day without rain since before Easter. </div>

There was a morning where I decided to wander without a map in an area outside of the usual tourist territory. I went for a walk in the mountains to the north. Really great experience. Saw a woman walking her dog and saying hello to all her neighbors, children playing in the street, and an old man pruning a tree. Would have liked to take a pictures if I hadn't felt uncomfortable with interrupting his tranquility. I was reminded of going on walks with my grandmother in the mountains of Taiwan where she lives, where everyone knows each other and there's a strong sense of neighborhood. Instead of taking a picture of the man and his tree, i took a picture of one the neighbors' doors... </div>

These were the most enjoyable street musicians I've heard since coming to Europe. I was pretty amused when the guy brought his enormous bass onto the train and started plucking out a beat. I really enjoy street music here. It's generally more cultured than what one gets in the states. A lot of classical music; I've seen brass players, violinists, pianists, woodwinds... Is it the culture here or that the street performers are actually of a higher class? And yes they perform <i>on</i> trains. The first time this happened I thought there was music playing over the speakers on the train, but later realized it was the performers when they came around to collect. </div>

The chamfered corners of the Barcelona block really threw off my rhythm when I first arrived and went to my hostel. I'm used to mindlessly following the surface of the buildings to my right or left in order to go straight, but in Barcelona, this habit would end up with me walking in circles around a block. I didn't actually do this, but intersections made me think about the way I'm used to walking around a city. </div>
<br />
If I were to go back to Spain, I would want to travel with someone else. It felt like a place to be with others. (Especially when restaurants put two straws in your sangria when you're the only one there...) I did, however, meet a really fascinating traveler from Turkey, an architect from Chile, a family from France, an irritating couple from China, and some very helpful Catelonians, so overall not a lonely venture.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-146694312877858865.post-30217376967177406542012-04-18T13:55:00.005-07:002012-04-18T14:37:08.311-07:00Promenade Plantée à Bois de Vincennes<div>Spring happened a few weeks ago, and now I'm back in my winter jacket. Meanwhile here's some beautiful photos to remind us all of how miserable it was outside for most of this week. </div><div><br /></div><div>I took an amazingly long walk from Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes, elevated up on the promenade plantée. This was described to me as the 'high-line' of Paris. Both the High Line in New York and the promenade plantée are linear parks created from old unused elevated rail lines. Paris' was the original. </div><div><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbgaqDsCkvrv1oJJdYI3PqNBaoe7m67uAR18rqdoiLoBqk6pkg2J3i9V97hsUHV3XVlqTA876qVBfZL7GZzZ0tykZ6RXm1lPOi0EWxaLeT_MNiODan4CtCA6oDTAEBKvClh4aMQpMKPaQ/s1600/IMG_0207.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbgaqDsCkvrv1oJJdYI3PqNBaoe7m67uAR18rqdoiLoBqk6pkg2J3i9V97hsUHV3XVlqTA876qVBfZL7GZzZ0tykZ6RXm1lPOi0EWxaLeT_MNiODan4CtCA6oDTAEBKvClh4aMQpMKPaQ/s400/IMG_0207.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732851378589398658" /></a><br />The biggest difference to note was that the high-line was made to be extroverted, to walk along and watch the spectacle of New York City life down below. Promenade Plantée was much more self-engaged, an escape. It was often difficult to see the city to either side. Two ways to think about a park.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIcWnOaZeMpkW14f73Uv8_KCCr4IrfaH6RKQb71kojiHtY3Fz1HvvMjy-VZOeGPkDxyxGspn3fqHlTx_MPA3oHQsD3g0eutPlNWLQEdYpR7onsTjQ9S_aw7E_gNGUnUpwiUbUJypG8uPE/s1600/IMG_0209.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 241px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIcWnOaZeMpkW14f73Uv8_KCCr4IrfaH6RKQb71kojiHtY3Fz1HvvMjy-VZOeGPkDxyxGspn3fqHlTx_MPA3oHQsD3g0eutPlNWLQEdYpR7onsTjQ9S_aw7E_gNGUnUpwiUbUJypG8uPE/s400/IMG_0209.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732849886839101842" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAv13IrRpj8GM7KJcsmbhtl8zkmQu9uvp7z1wb64Cs-fP4jrrfuKnLUPRLmQMa-mzyN2vkd7Zi2TVNGjGhy5non2TPSZfK7Nkrn_qDxtXnVa8tx-qTdorGj_n2BFhpprDutnXxiWWmsg8/s1600/IMG_0212.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 218px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAv13IrRpj8GM7KJcsmbhtl8zkmQu9uvp7z1wb64Cs-fP4jrrfuKnLUPRLmQMa-mzyN2vkd7Zi2TVNGjGhy5non2TPSZfK7Nkrn_qDxtXnVa8tx-qTdorGj_n2BFhpprDutnXxiWWmsg8/s400/IMG_0212.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732849142902129826" /></a><br />At the end, after 3 miles of walking, is the absolutely enormous Bois de Vincennes (Vincennes Forest).
